A simple overstrike is something that also a "plain vanilla" TrueType font
could do.

But unfortunately that's quite not enough to a decent support of combining
diacritics: just look at the different vertical placement and size of the
same diacritic in <é> and <É>; and, if you view this message in a
proportional font, also see the different horiziontal placement of the same
accent in <é> and <í>.
