they are not baroque. They are used by many professionals who need to
edit documents in ways that the standard tools don't allow so easily
every single day. It is OK if you don't want to use them, really.
The reason I said they "are probably too complicated" is because I was
addressing you in particular. You are frustrated by Windows' behavior,
have made it plain they you don't think technology is something you want
to keep up to date with, or even discuss on this list. Until you needed
help I guess - heh!

That is was not helpful to you speaks more of you then me. You are the
one who didn't want to type a few words into a search engine for built
in help functionality, so you are pretty much not taken seriously when
it comes to knowing what is helpful and what isn't.
In any case, I could not care less if you use the suggestions or not.
Others here have clearly run across similar issues while performing
similar tasks. Should they come up against these types of tasks again,
and they recall this thread, they can gather some more tips on ways to
manage their circumstances at that time. Apparently unbeknownst to you,
the internet is full of such free giving in the technical help arena. so
much so, that it has been several years since I had an error message I
was not able to google and find that people had written about precisely
the same issue I had.

Good luck typing the way that was suggested earlier! It must be a
terrible drain to do such detailed grunt work for a main of your
abilities! Please do let us know what you decide to do and how it works out!
