I wouldn't recommend fiddling about in Word shortcuts at all.
Much better to install an appropriate keyboard layout (Control
Panel | Regional Options or Keyboard | Input Locales). "United
States-International" has shortcuts for many Western European
languages using the right ALT key; otherwise choose a language.
MS also make something called On-Screen Keyboard which you can
use with the mouse or just keep on screen for reference when
using an unfamiliar keyboard layout. If you have the
accessibility utilities installed you should find it at Start
Menu | Programs | Accessories | Accessibility | On-Screen
Keyboard.
