Could be - consider "Adobe" a place holder for the set of companies that
upon further reflection might be interested. Heck, even Microsoft, Sun,
IBM, Apple, or the Open Source Foundation might be. If pressed I could
probably even make a case for Intel. I just mentioned Adobe OTTOMH
because they are definitely known to have funded such things in the past
and continue to fund such things in the present. And that project
directly resulted in two books by O'Reilly. But there are certainly
other possibilities too.

Maybe, but there is a long way from what Ken Lunde's group does and
actual products that go out the door. It is essentially pure R and D,
and it is clear that Adobe does invest in that, as do the others listed
above. This would definitely be a R and D investment as I am thinking of
it, not a product investment. But it could have some marketing impact
too for the investor(s)...
