I suppose somewhere there's a prior context to this thread, though
people on this list seem sometimes to be overly (not overley :-)
enthusiastic about revising the subject line, so if there's a prior
context I have no idea where it is.



So, you want a word processor that will do a decent job of positioning
combining marks over/under a base character? Is this for any script in
particular?



If I've understood right what you want, you're far better off with Word
2003 than either Word 97 or Word 5.1 (a Mac version).



For instance, I can set something like the following in Word using the
Doulos SIL font (shown here as an image since your system might not
render the plain text as intended):
