We could say that through the 1950s at least, "Palmer method" was the
handwriting most usually taught. But I don't know what OP meant by
saying that this or that handwriting is "based on" typefaces. That's
backward.

These days, I wonder whether handwriting is taught at all --
block-printed capitals seems to be the rule.
