Because of computer technology and specially the because of the
abundant use of e-mail, many German don't use the Umlaut-dieresis any
more when writing e-mails, so they replace ä, ö and ü by ae, oe and ue.
I suppose, people tend not to use diacritical signs any more in all
orhographies who have such signs. Of course, that's not really a loss
of these signs (and hopefully by advancing computer technology, there
will be no longer any need for this), but it is an influence from an
technology on the handling of characters.
