in all the discussion of "featural" systems, i find it strange that there
is so little mention of pitman shorthand or gregg shorthand, which were
once used daily by thousands of people. daniels' article in WL&L pp. 807
ff. discusses them, and he illustrates gregg but not pitman.

both these systems were partly "featural", pitman i think more than gregg.
pitman was used by some people when i was growing up, and gregg until at
least the 1960s. they even used to be printed, in textbooks for
stenographers.

these systems may not relevant to present-day typographic concerns, but
they are certainly relevant to the typology and history of writing systems.
