Hi all,

Do we need a separate group? I am sure we all owe a lot to Jim's memory. Is it possible to find a way to get access to the moderation rights of this group and transfer ownership to someone else that we all deem fit and eligible? What would be required for that? I am not so sure it is such a good idea to make another group unless absolutely required. To enshrine Jim's memory respectfully, I think we can have a pictures of Jim on the group's home page. I think we owe it to Jim to try and continue his legacy rather than abandon this group, if possible.

In any case, the fact that we are all able to send emails to this group for now, shows that there is no urgent need to start another group right away. As Robert pointed out, we have never had a need to moderate anyone's messages either. We can make a decision to move, if Yahoo tells us that it is absolutely impossible to transfer ownership, and it begins to harm our harmonious discussions here.

Thanks,
Balaji

Dear all,

I am also very grateful for the photos, and I like the idea of having Jim's name in the new group's name. He will live forever in my memory, and he has so much done for the study of Pali by administering this group! We sometimes exchanged emails privately, and I admired and appreciated him so much. He was so "rich" in a sense...

I have become a bit quiet in the list (and paused working on my Ph.D. dissertation about Pali-Thai translations of the Tipitaka), being busy with my family (children aged 3 years and 2 1/2 months :-), and a dedicated father), but I always appreciate following discussions if time allows me.

Kind regards,
Susanne

Dear Dmytro,
I think you would be a good choice for admin of the new io groups .
You are a long time scholar of Pali and a hermit (like Jim)- I would love to hear more about that!- and quite young.
best regards
Robert

Dear Dmytro,

Your suggestion to move to groups.io seems reasonable to me, because, in either case, we need to chose a new admin. I was also thinking that we could name the new group after Jim, "Jim Anderson Pali Group", or something in these lines. That is simply a suggestion. Let's see what others think.

Best wishes to all,
Aleix

Dear Robert,

When he started the group , some 18 years back, he added me as a moderator. During this time, there hasn't been a single post that had to be moderated by me - apparently Pali scholars are not especially prone to troll or giving out insults.

IMHO, the quiet and reserved character of Jim Anderson contributed to this as well. I will remember him as a fellow hermit.

I still have moderator status, but have no idea whether that aids in administering the group (I think Jim was the only one with admin rights).

It's great we have you as a moderator, but this doesn't aid in administering the group.

So there are two issues:

1. Is there a possibility to recover the admin password?
This leads to a question of how we are to choose an admin, and what are the requirements for future admin(s).

2. Should we move to some other place like https://groups.io or whatever?
This requires answering first a question of how we are to make decisions - by voting, by delegating the decision to figures of authority, etc.?

Best wishes, Dmytro
