Dear Aleix,

Thanks for the attachemets which I will look at later. I'm currently looking at folio 0d with the table of contents with all the paricchedas of the first half of the Saddanīti-ṭikā so I think we may have the whole ṭīkā along with no. 499.2. I will prepare a more usable table of contents and check the contents. The jālinī title given to the ms is wrong and will have to be corrected. So far, so good.

Best wishes,

Jim

Dear Jim,

I attach the first folio of Ms.544, which seems to be the Sadd-ṭīkā, both in the margin title and in the text. The Saddasāratthajālinī-ṭīkā does not have the beginning yo yenāyaṃ etc. Perhaps he has sent you the wrong file?

Ms.639 has the title Saddanīti-ṭīkā-nissaya and includes a few paricchedas beginning with the seven if the index is right. The latest version of the catalogue says that the margin title is Saddanītiṭīkā, but I can see Saddanītiṭīkānisya. And if the beginning is really the 7th pariccheda, it is not a nissaya on the Saddanīti but probably its cty.

As far as I could see there are no other Sadd-ṭīkā-nissayas, only Sadd-nissayas.

Unfortunately I cannot look at the materials properly at this moment, because I only have what I kept in my hard drive when we did the photos the first time, and it is incomplete. But next month I will have access to the entire collection in pdf and I will be in a better position to help you. I hope at least these two pics can help you. The catalogue still contains mistakes I think.

With best wishes,
Aleix

Dear Aleix,

Dr. Pruit provided me with a copy of the Burmese ms. UPT544 only to find out that the title at the top of presumably every page reads Saddasāratthajālinī-ṭīkā/. He also sent me the latest update of the catalogue and this is what it says about no. 544:

UPT544. Saddanīti-ṭīkā (သဒ္ဒနီတိဋီကာ) by Moṅး-thoṅ Charā-tō Rhaṅ Paññāsāmi (armif;axmifq&mawmf &Sifynmomrd).
leaves, fols. 0d–pār, 242a; 50 × 6 cm.;
Copied in Sakkarāj 1290 (A.D. 1928).
Remarks: The title and name of the author are on the paper title slip. Piṭ-sm, p. 149, n. 205, gives the author’s name as Bhuṃ-kyō Charā-tō. The titles on the title fol. 0c are “Saddanīti-ṭīkā, Pathama, Sikkhāpadavaḷañjana-aṭṭhakathā”. The titles on the contents fol. 0d are “Saddanīti-ṭīkā nhaṅ̥ Sikkhāpadavaḷañjana”. The title in the margins is “Sandanīti-ṭīkā”. The second text is not in the manuscript; see UPT457.1 (the text starts on fol. pi) where the title is spelled “-vaḷañcana”. James Anderson (jimanderson.on@...) says it is the Saddasāratthajālinī-ṭīkā.
Beginning text: namo ~ ။ yo yenayaṃ varaṃ neti ။ jino sutena sattamaṃ ။(ယော ယေနယံ ၀ရံ နေတိ ။ ဇိနော သုတေန သတ္တမံ ။)

I still have to take a closer look and it so happens that I have a printed copy of the Saddasāratthajālinī-ṭīkā in pdf format which is only 107 pages compared to the much larger ms pdf of 242 leaves (about 500 pages) suggesting that it's not the same text. It leaves open the possibility that it might be the Sadd-ṭīkā after all. Just have to do some comparing and will let you know what I find...

I would also like to have the nissaya (no. 639) on the Saddanīti-ṭīkā.for checking the readings.

I don't have the earlier catalogue you refer to. It would be good to know if the passage you quoted actually belongs to the first half of Sadd-ṭ.

Best wishes,

Jim

<< Regarding the Sadd-ṭīkā you are right, it is number 544, and I do have it. In fact I published a few excerpts in the first printed version of the catalogue or list of the U Pho Thi, together with some excerpts of the Mukhamattasāra (which I am in the process of editing with a few other mss.). Both works were considered lost. When you wrote that the first part was not located, I had a doubt whether I actually used the beginning or not (it was a few years ago and I do not even have the publication with me, do you have it?). My files of Sadd-ṭīkā do not have title and I could not see it. I have the photos of 544 now but in a few weeks I will have access to the pdf. I can send it to you at that time if that is ok. It it is urgent I can try to send you the photos but my internet connection is very limited. Perhaps Dr William Pruitt can send you the pdf of Ms544? >>
