Dear Chris,
Thank you for pointing out the unicode location of the metrical symbols. I
see there are a set of nine symbols (u+23d1 to u+23d9). I have since found
that the way to put the breve or short symbol above the macron over a vowel
is to type the long vowel first followed by the u+0306 (combining breve)
keystroke, e.gs., ā̆, ī̆, and ū̆ which may not display correctly in an
email but works fine in the Gandhari Unicode font set.
With regards,
Jim------------------------------

Dear Jim,
Yes, unicode includes this symbol. See:
http://www.charbase.com/23d3-unicode-metrical-short-over- long
Related symbols include:
http://www.charbase.com/23d2-unicode-metrical-long-over- short
http://www.charbase.com/23d4-unicode-metrical-long-over- two-shorts
These symbols may be found in the Gandhari unicode set (for MS Word, use
"insert symbol").
Regards,
Chris

Dear All,
I have seen in printed books a combination of a macron ( ¯ ) with a breve
( ˘ ) above with or without an underlying vowel especially when dealing
with prosody. It shows that the vowel can be either long or short in
scansion. I have checked a few Unicode blocks and have not yet seen this
combinination anywhere in use online, not even in the aritcles on prosody in
Wikipedia or Encyclopedia Britannica.
Does anyone have any idea how the combination can be rendered with a
keyboard if that is possible?
It's all part of an ongoing project to create a customized keyboard layout
with many capabilities.
Best wishes,
Jim
