Dear Chris,
You aks:
<< For the entries that don't list a Sanskrit root (e.g., 'cara' [I], pg65),
is this merely because there is not Sanskrit root, or what's going on? >>
Lists of roots differ widely among the native Pāli and Sanskrit grammar
schools and so a root in one list may not have a parellel in another. The
lists for the Pāli Dhātupāṭha (of the Moggalāna school) has only 639 roots
while the Dhātumañjūsā (of the Kaccāyana school) has 884 roots as per
Andersen and Smith's edition. So there are many more gaps if one compares
these with the Dhātumālā (1687 roots). There are about 2000 Sanskrit roots
in Pāṇini's Dhātupāṭha. I looked into the case of "cara caraṇe I 146" on
page 46 which Smith numbers 715 (Sadd II 423,11). He gives an Mmd 659
reference (footnote 5) and indeed "cara caraṇe" does occur in Mmd (a number
of times in my search). However, it does not occur in the Pāli Dhāutpāṭha
nor the Dhātumañjūsā. Mmd refers to the Mukhamattadīpanī (a commentary on
Kaccāyana) aka Nyāsa and is an earlier work than the Saddanīti and was known
to Aggavaṃsa as he mentions it in his own work.
Best wishes,
Jim
