Dear Balaji,
In at least two late commentaries on Kaccāyana's grammar, there is a story
that explains how Mahākaccāyana came to compose his grammar. It was about a
decade ago that I read it and so my recollection may be somewhat fuzzy. It
is found in the comments on the first grammtical sutta (attho
akkharasaññāto). This sutta is said to have been formulated by the Buddha
after remarking on a monk's mispronounciation which in turn led Kaccāyana
(being foremost in explaining in detail what has been said in brief) to
compose a grmmar out of the first sutta.
Best wishes,
Jim

Thanks a lot Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi, Bryan and Aleix, for all the pointers.
Thanks a lot for this reference.
Would you be knowing of any other references to memorization, and/or
pronunciation?
Thanks,
Balaji
