Dear Mark and Steve,

Thanks very much. It is Christoph who deserves all the credit for this initiative. I am just helping out. And yes, I think it does speak well for the U of T's commitment to Buddhist studies; hopefully the program will grow over the years. I fogot to mention that Christoph's course introduces the Pali students to the Burmese script which is also very valuable, since so much of Pali is written in non-Roman scripts.

Yes this indeed good news.  Congratulations.  Here at Chicago I insist that students have done at least a year's Sanskrit before undertaking Pali, and then we read whatever the students (rarely more than 2 or 3) want to read, at whatever level they happen to be at.  Somewhat haphazard and not at all a structured program such as you have in Toronto.

I enclose a write-up on Pali studies available at he University of Toronto for the 2016-2017 academic year, under the supervision of Prof. Christoph Emmrich. Prof Emmrich  is teahing introductory Pali, and Libbie Mills and myself are teaching intermediate and advanced.
 
If you know of anyone in the Toronto area who is thinking of studying Pali, please pass this information circular on to them. Classes will start in September.
 
May I al so take this opportunity to remind the group that the International Association of Buddhist Studies (IABS) conference will be held in Toronto next August (2017), and anyone interested in presenting a paper at the conference should submit it at home - International Association for Buddhist Studies 2017 University of Toronto. Subissions are open unttil October 1, 2016,
