Hi Petra

It's probably just your browser.I use Firefox and it comes up as

巴利语辞典 Pali Dictonary

without the http://

Try a different browser. The Chinese just says Ba-li (Pali) dictionary. There are a few Pali-Chinese and one Pali-Japanese dictionary (plus a Pali-Vietnamese dictionary) on this site as well,

Tks,

Bryan

Hallo Brian, and others,

Brian, your link doesn't work on my computer. Any idea?
Regarding the words in the Burmese-Pali Dictionary, there always is given a Burmese translation first, then follows a quotation from Pāli plus references; sometimes there are further Pāli explanations.
I don't have the impression that in this case the Burmese translations help much, since the Burmese authors also had only these few references at hand, and clearly operate with mouth (pāḥ cap.), drum (caññ.), etc. Eventually someone who is fluent in Burmese could translate these translations, but I think they will not help solve the question.

Best,
Petra

Thanks Petra,

It looks like the dictionary may be in electronic form at

The second Pali-Burmese dictionary listed (Tipiṭaka Pāli-Burmese Dictionary) may be the one we are talking about. Unfortunately my idea of cut and paste doesn't work very well.

Dhivan, most of the words you are asking about appear in this dictionary,
but I can't read them and Google translate is no help,

Best wishes, Bryan

Dear All,

thank you too, Chris, for the link. That's great.
There is another resource, the Pāḷipada piṭaka-kyam.ḥ ññvhan.ḥ, Rangoon 1972ff. starting with the letter ya and going to the end of the alphabet, listing all references of a word, without giving a meaning. I got 4 volumes ending with ho. This is helpful if one looks for further references.

Best,
Petra

It looks like the most comprehensive Pali dictionary available, and until Petra sent in a sample, I didn't even know it existed. Perhaps we have to learn Burmese? I can read the script with difficulty, but I know nothing of the language. The Burmese monks have a reputation for great learning,
