Hi Bryan,

What are you putting in the "Derivation" field?

When I think about a database for language-learning, I imagine having a field for roots that links to a table of roots.  And maybe even keeping a link from roots to words that contain that root.

Is this what you had in mind?

While it would be a lot easier with a real database, it looks like it is possible with Google Spreadsheets.

Hi Tim,

Yes I would like to have the ability to include sound and image files.

Right now I see about 8 fields:

Headword
Definition
Derivation
Tibetan/Chinese and other language equivalents
Canonical context
Notes
References
Sound and/or image files

Someone has suggested that I use Wordpress which has a dictionary add-on, so I'm looking into that. Thanks for the reference to Intuit Quick Base, so I'll look into that as well,

Best wishes,

Bryan

Bryan,

I looked at a couple of options and Google Spreadsheets and Zoho Docs are the only free options I could find.  Of course, these are both spreadsheets, not databases.

Intuit QuickBase is a great online database for non-technical users, but it is expensive.

Are there any particular features that you are looking for?

Would you mind sharing the schema that you're using?  Does your database include audio files, or do you imaging including them as an option?

Thanks,
Tim

Dear Bryan,

For ease of access, use and discussion, visual mapping would be useful.
Issues of interpretation, ideas, arguments pro and con, can be arranged in multiple visual maps, with cross-links between them.

For example, it would be possible to map conveniently our recent discussions of the terms 'Buddha', 'suttanta', etc., with easy overview. Furthermore, collaborative work would be possible, if maps are 'unlocked'.

Software which allows for many maps with cross-references, and options of collaboration: http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/designengineering/tools/designvue

Best wishes,
                     Dmytro

Dear Friends,
For some time I've been working on a personal,  informal database of difficult Pali words and phrases (not in current dictionaries, hard to find, obscure, etc) and I'd like to put it in a form which is accessible through the web for others, and also in a form which would have a more sophisticated cross-reference system, more fields, etc. Would anyone know what software would be appropriate for this task, that is also usable by a novice (to database technology) ike myself?
Thanks for your help,
Bryan
