"One moment one is asleep. Next moment one is awake."

The above statement is difficult to understand. It follows from the Ariyan Truth of Dukkha.

Ariyan Truth of Dukkha, under the heading First Noble Truth is discussed in What the Buddha Taught [Walpola Rahula],
It shows the difficulty of understanding Ariyan Truth of Dukkha. He starts the Chapter with a scathing criticism of the translation of Dukkha as suffering. Then use suffering in his translation of Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta.

This describes how I used to understand "Enlightenment". It's like "Bing!" You're en-light-ened. (I also imagined some kind of spiritual bright light—whatever that means!) And I was meditating hard waiting for that bing moment.

I've dropped that idea now. Even the normal waking up from sleep is not really sudden. I recall once being in a dream, then it stopped, just darkness and silence, and I wondered what was happening. Then I realises, "Oh, I'm waking up."
