Yes. My approach is differenf from yours.let me explain.

When I first gave a meaning to sānu I just said: Saanu means a flat land on a mountain.

This meaning didn't come from any dictionary. It is based on the present day usage of the word in Sinhala (Sinhalese).

It is the literal meaning of Saanu in Sinhala; used expecially, in Geography. A more popular word for plateau in Sinhala is tanna (a as in cat, t as in that).

By the way my mother tongue is Sinhala.

Sinhala is a language derived from, possibly, Pali, and Sanskrit, may be some words from Tamil. After the advent of the Europeans you see some Dutch, Portugese, Spanish and English words in Sinhala.

The meaning I gave is also the meaning given in Abhidhaanappdipika. Therefore, there is a good chance that it is derived from Paali.

nu is an indeclinable according to PED. See Warder also [grammatical index], Buddhadatta Part iii page 161 ff

It is not possible to give a unique meaning any of the indeclinables.

I actually took saanu to be sa + anu

Anu here means to move towards some objective in a step-by-step. "anupubbena caarikam caramaano.."

That is to move some thing with strong devotion. So saanu is one who is with devotion.

My take:
ṇu is an uṇādi affix added to the root san to form sānu. This affix is
probably the one described at Kacc 671 (673). Affixes are prevalent in Abh-ṭ
when giving a derivation of a word.

I will eventually get back to you on the word pāḷi.

I think Jim has already answered it. I have a Abhidhanappadipika published
in Sri Lanka with Sinhala and English meanings,

b) what does vetthiyaṃ mean under item 607?
The word is not in the Suttas. So very difficult to give a meaning. I am
giving it a try.
There is a word vetheti in the Pitaka, meaning bind, bonding etc.

Patiṭṭhate asminti pattho: Pattho: standing on something--think of Sīle

Sana sambhattiyaṃ, ṇu, sambhajīyate sevīyateti sānu--Sana is devotion, nu
is to employ serve, associate etc. with devotion.

This is the meaning of sānu in the Samyutta. [In Pali adjectives are also
nouns, names etc.]

The sānu as a plateau is in the commentaries. It is derived from the above.
Plateu is a place of rest, freedom etc. Devotion to Dhamma brings rest,
freedom, peace, and gets rid of fear.

There could be many mistakes in the above. Please read it carefull and
comment on anything that you find not clear.
