As an exercise in lexicography, it might be worthwhile for the group to
collaborate on producing a scholarly dictionary-grade article on the word
"pāḷi" (also in compounds) starting with the canonical usage followed by the
commentarial usage. We could also study and discuss the entries in Childers,
PED, Buddhaddatta and NED & OED. I heard that OED has just come out with a
2014 edition.

opinion that Paali is the "literaray language" of the early Buddhists. This
I do not think is correct [Early Buddhists didn't have a literary
language]. However, to establish beyond doubt what it means it is necessary
to write a full-length paper with all the trappings of a scholarly paper. >>
