Dear Bryan,
Thanks for the input. I just looked up pāḷi in Abh and found 5 synonyms in
the sense of panti and 4 meanings for pāḷi:
Abh 539ab: Panti vīthyā’vali seṇī, pāḷi . . .
(ṭịkā: Pā rakkhaṇe, ḷi, pāḷi, sogatepi.) This root is in Sadd, no. 542
but I'm puzzled about sogate, it is not given in the Sadd root list.
Abh 996cd: Setusmiṃ tanti pantīsu, nāriyaṃ pāḷi kathyate.
(ṭịkā: Tanti buddhavacanaṃ. Panti āḷi) The additional meaning is nārī
(woman, wife, female). I wonder what is the difference between vacana and
bhāsā. Kacc 52 points to a set of grammatical rules for the jinavacana.
Best wishes,
Jim

Dear Jim,D. C. and all,
Thanks for this reference. I was unaware of this discussion in Saddanīti.
Saddanīti's author derives it from the root pāl to protect, as well as pāli,
"dike, margin, edge, row, line" and ali, "dike" and paṭipāṭī (< Skt.
pari-pāṭi, "succession, order" = Pāli pāli, "line", related to Skt. pāra,
"shore, end, limit"). The dike refers to a passage in AN4, 27910-14 where
the Buddha talks about building a dike around a lake so the water doesn't
overflow, comparing it to Vinaya principles not to be transgressed. The
"succession" refers to Pj 2, 8710, re: monks begging for alms in a row
(piṇḍāya caramānā rājaṅgaṇe pāḷiyā agamaṃsu). Note Burmese variant
paṭipāṭiyā for pāḷiyā.
