Let me first apologize for being ambiguous and make amends.

When I wrote "Pali is a creation of Rhys Davids and William Stede" I meant Pali language [Pali: the English word].

I fully agree with the definition "Pāla rakkhaṇe" and that Pāḷi is a related.

The issue is really what is the meaning of "pāḷi" given "Pāla rakkhaṇe".

My approach to the subject is slightly different. I would derive the meaning from the word "pāletii". It occurs in the in the Sutta Pitaka in the sense of "rakkhane". I have problems with the meanings "line, row..." given in the PTSD.

With the method I propose I would be free of any sectarian bias. It is verry difficult and long.

However, I can guess the meaning without any difficulty: Words attributed to Bhagavā (Buddho) in the Dhamma and Vinaya.

There are reasons for my guess: Bhagavā is a reference to "Bhagavā Araham Sammā Sambuddho" by his disciples. Bhagavā here has the meaning Lord; to the disciples, their Teacher was the Lord. Dhamma and Vinaya together is the Teaching of the "Bhagavā Araham Sammā Sambuddho".

Saddanīti, a 12th century text on Pali grammar. There is an excellent

This is a good starting point for a working definition of "pāḷi" with 3
meanings and 2 derivations. I know that pāḷi in the second sense is found in
the Vinayaptṭaka.

science classes. Later it was a fundamental guideline for writing as an
electrical engineer.

In accordance with that I propose that Pali be defined as follows:

Pali corpus: the texts published by the Pali Text Society.

Pali Lexicon: the vocabulary given in the PTS Dictionary by Rhys Davids and
William Stede.

Remark: Pali is a word coined by PTSD. There is a headword there, Pāli
(Pāḷi), which says
"It is the literary language of the early Buddhists, closely related to
Māgadhī."

From the above it follows that the language the Buddha spoke has nothing to
do with Pali. [Pali is a creation of Rhys Davids and William Stede.].
