It reminds me of our TTP projects where we did something similar for
the Milindapañho

Maybe one day we'll have editions for the entire Tipitaka ;-)

The Sri Lankan's had a similar ancient tradition with word by word
paraphrasing called "sannaya" texts which were used as text books for
studying Pali (there is a wonderful book on that topic by Prof. Anne
Blackburn "Buddhist learning and textual
practice"<http://books.google.com/books?id=176xGspAMkQC&dq=Blackburn+sri+lanka&hl=en&sa=X&ei=xCKRUPyjFIXm9AS_k4CwDQ&ved=0CDIQ6AEwAQ>
).

Our latest project (co-incidently) is the Dhammapada-Aṭṭh which will come
