Dear Venerable Bodhi,

Just a couple of quick comments.

You wrote:
<< What I was really interested in was the question whether there was any
basis for Soma Thera’s insertion of “the sun” into the passage. As Ven.
Yuttadhammo suggests, Soma may have had in mind the Dhanuggahasutta from the
Opamma-samyutta. Perhaps in the original printed edition he included a note
explaining his rendering (I have only the electronic version); if not, he
should certainly have included such a note. >>

I have the Fourth Edtion (printed 1975) of Soma Thera's The Way of
Mindfulness. This edition has only 4 pages of notes at the back (pp. 194-7)
and none of them pertain to your quoted passage from Soma. Perhaps the
original edition of 1941 contained more copious notes?

In an earlier message you wrote:
<< Then, further along, passages 2 and 3 have a noun bandha, while passages
4 and 5 have the past participle baddha, which seems to work better. >>

I think it's possible "bandha" in passages 2 and 3  could be read as a past
participle too. Cf. "anubandhā honti" in the Burmese reading of the first
paragraph of the Brahmajālaṣutta instead of "anubaddhā honti" as seen in
other readings. The difference may be due to baddha being derived from the
root badh and bandha from bandh, both of which have the same root meaning
(bandhane). The derivation of the p.p. bandha could be roughly explained as
follows: bandha+ta > banddha > bandha (with elision of "d" in a cluster of 3
consonants).

In the subject line it is better to avoid using the special unicode
characters as they may not display properly. Best to use the Velthuis
scheme for this line. However, the use of the special romanized Pali and
Sanskrit unicode characters work fine in the body of the group messages.
Perhaps not so for the few who receive the messages in the form of daily
digests.

Best wishes,

Jim
