[Kaccāyanabyākaraṇaṃ, Sandhikappa, Pañcamakaṇḍa, Sutta 48]

48. 43. Kvaci paṭi patissa (137).

Pati icc' etassa sare vā byañjane vā pare kvaci paṭi-ādeso hoti.

When a consonant or a vowel follows, sometimes there is the substitution of
‘pati’ for ‘paṭi’.

[. . . sometimes there is the subsittute 'paṭi' for 'pati'. --ja]

Paṭaggi (Vin. iv, 279) dātabbo, paṭihaññati (Vin. iv, 292).

Examples:
paṭaggi: pati aggi; pat i aggi (10); pat aggi (12); paṭ aggi (48);
      paṭaggi (11).
paṭihaññati: pati haññati; paṭi haññati (48); paṭihaññati.

Kvacī ti kasmā? Paccantimesu janapadesu (Vin. īi, 287), patilīyati (A. ī,
434), patirūpadesavāso ca (Khu. i, 4).

Why say ‘sometimes’? To prevent the operation of this rule in the following:
Paccantimesu janapadesu, patilīyati, patirūpadesavāso ca.

Counter Examples:
paccantimesu: pati antimesu; pa ti antimesu (10); pa c antimesu (19);
     pa cc antimesu (28); paccantimesu (11).
patilīyati. pati līyati. No substitution.
patirūpadesavāso. pati rūpadesavāso. No substitution.
