If one sets one's e-mail client to UTF-8, one can send and receive Chinese
characters. No need for file attachments. I received these emails with PDF
files attached and no links. I would prefer not to get attachments. (As a
Buddhist, I try to avoid them )

Thanks Richard et al.

I also prefer not to get attachments in the group emails. The one sent was
due to a mistake I made in the setting. After seeing some nasty results so
far, I have decided to keep it at the old setting of no attachments
whatsoever. If a member has some attachment or file to send, they can upload
it to the files' section in the group's homepage and inform the rest of us
about it and/or provide a link if possible. The best formats, I find, are
RTF and PDF.

Although I myself do not read Chinese and do not have a Chinese font
installed, I see no reason why members who do know Chinese can't put Chinese
characters in their messages. It is a good idea though to add a roman
transliteration as in the example of Bryan's recent post in UTF-8: 非我 (fei
wo). The Chinese characters on the left display as two narrow vertical
rectangles in my mail viewer.

Members are advised not to put special utf-8 characters in the subject line.
Yahoo!groups isn't fully user-friendly with the utf-8 encoding in some
areas.
