[Kaccāyanabyākaraṇaṃ, Sandhikappo, Sutta 8]

8. 10. Aṃ iti niggahitaṃ.

Aṃ iti niggahitaṃ nāma hoti.

‘ṃ’ is called niggahita.

Tena kvattho? Aṃ byañjane niggahitaṃ.

What is the need of that (saying niggahita)? When there a consonant
(follows) there is niggahita which is ‘ṃ’ (see §30).

Note: In some grammatical works, 'niggahitaṃ' is written 'niggahītaṃ' with a
long i (ī) in the third syllable.
