[Kaccāyanabyākaraṇaṃ, Sutta 1]
1. 1. Attho akkharasaññāto.
Sabbavacanānam attho akkhareh' eva saññāyate. Akkharavipattiyaṃ hi atthassa
dunnayatā hoti, tasmā akkharakosallaṃ bahūpakāraṃ Suttantesu.
The meaning of all words is only known by letters. For failure with letters
leads to the wrong meaning. Therefore, skillfulness with letters is very
useful in the Discourses.

note: "1. 1. Attho akkharasaññāto." Of the two numbers, the first one refers
to the sutta number (1 to 673) of the Kaccāyanabyākaraṇa while the second
refers to the corresponding sutta number of the Padarūpasiddhi (1 to 684).
Apparently U Nandisena does not translate the sutta line itself which I
would translate as "The meaning is correctly known through the letters."
