Hi Bryan,
The following is an excerpt from the Nyaasa that givea the steps in
forming the word "abhivandiya". Much of it is over my head.
abhivandiyātyādīni udāharaṇāni || tatthaca abhivandiyāti abhipubbassa
vanda abhivādanetīmassa laddhadhātusaññādissa abhivanditvā
gacchatītyatthe pubbakālekakattukānaṃ tunatvānatvāvāti tvāpaccayaṃ
katvā purasamupaparīhi karotissa khakharāvā tapaccayesu cāti vattamāne
iminā tvāpaccayassa yakārādesaṃ katvā heṭṭhā vuttanayena ikārāgamaṃ
katvā netabbe nīte rūpaṃ || itaraṃ vāggahaṇaphalaṃ || Mmd (p. 424) ad
Kc 597 ||
I have divided it below with a few notes:
abhivandiyātyādīni udāharaṇāni ||
1)
tatthaca abhivandiyāti abhipubbassa vanda abhivādanetīmassa
laddhadhātusaññādissa abhivanditvā gacchatītyatthe
pubbakālekakattukānaṃ tunatvānatvāvāti tvāpaccayaṃ katvā
abhi + vand + tvā (according to Kc 564: pubbakālekakattukānaṃ
tunatvānatvāvā)
2)
purasamupaparīhi karotissa khakharāvā tapaccayesu cāti vattamāne iminā
tvāpaccayassa yakārādesaṃ katvā
iminā (suttena) = with this sutta (Kc 597) when Kc 594 is occurring.
The substitution of ya for tvā takes place here. The reference to Kc
594 (purasamupaparīhi karotissa khakharāvā tapaccayesu ca) is
puzzling. It seems to suggest a condition when the substitution can
take place. Rule 594 has to do with forms like saṅkhato and saṅkhāro.
3)
heṭṭhā vuttanayena ikārāgamaṃ katvā
This is where the āgama i is formed. It directs one to a method stated
earlier.
4)
netabbe nīte rūpaṃ ||
This is where all the components come together to form the complete
word.
Best wishes,
Jim
