Hi Jim,

Yes I've been trying to find a BHS version of this text, but so far I have been unable to. As far as I know, the Muulasarvaastivaadin Vinaya (or a portion of it) is preserved in the SaMghbhedavastu and I have checked that (it is on line at http://www.sub.uni-goettingen.de/ebene_1/fiindolo/gret_ree.htm#Index) but I can't find the incident there.
N. Dutt has published four volumes of the Gilgit manuscripts which I believe are also parts of the Muulasarvaastivaadin Vinaya, but U of T only has two of them that I've been able to locate so far, and the incident is not in them - I looked through them yersterday. Dutt has a useful English summary in the preface, and the story is not there (I also checked the Skt. word index for some of the key words of the story).

I'll keep looking,

Best wishes, Bryan

Hi Bryan,

> These are the references as given by Lamotte (1988:553-4) :
> Mahii"saasaka Vinaya (T 1421 ch. 26, p. 174b)
> Dharmaguptaka Vinaya (T 1428, ch. 52, p. 955a)
> Vinaayamaat. rka (T 1463, ch. 4, p. 822a)
> Sarvaastivaadin Vinaya (T 1435, ch. 38, p. 274a)
> Muulasarvaastivaadi n Vinaya (T 1451 ch. 6, p. 232b)

Could the last-mentioned one be a translation of an original
corresponding to the BHS version entitled
_Muulasarvaastuvaad avinayavastu_ , ed. S. Bhagchi, 1970 ?  I have Vol.
II only which is in the Devanagari script. Edgerton has something to
say on this topic in his introduction to his BHS grammar, pp. 1-2. He
disagrees with Buddhaghosa and Geiger. He also mentions a
Dharmaguptaka Vinaya text that comes close to the Pali but doesn't
give any precise reference.

If you ever find a BHS version of the Vin II 139 passage, could you
transcribe and post it to the list? That would be very interesting to
see.

Best wishes,
Jim
