The origin of the word is as obscure as Edgerton´s explanation. Later
sources like the Tibetan Mahaavyutpatti translate the term as hbras bu che,
"having great fruition." Why vehapphala is reproduced as b.rhatphala is in
my opinion phonologicaly inexplicable, although Edgerton attempted to solve
the problem.

I also looked up b.rhatphala in BHS where Edgerton has this to say:
b.rhatphala, m. pl. ,(written v.rh only Mahaavastu ii.349.1
and Mvy 3100; but = Pall vehapphala, which, if it really

latter is not a rationalizing hyper-Sanskritism, would seem
to be a MIndlc 'vrddhi' form based on *vihap...; cf. av.rha
or ab.rha(t) = Pali aviha; if not this, the origin of the
Pall is obscure), "having great fruition", one (the 3rd, but in
Mv and.Pali lst) of the classes of ruupaavacara gods in the
4th dhyaanabhuumi;
I have never seen this possible form *vihap... before, although there is a
past participle of vihaa (from the causative) vihaapita which means "gift",

Edgerton (in BHSD under "deva", page 270) says that b..rhatphala is written
as v.rhatphala in the Mahaavastu 2, and the Mahaavyutpatti. He gives the
Paali equivalent as vehapphala. So presumably it is a bahuvriihi meaning "he
whose fruit is abundant",as per Buddhaghosa.
I would like to get a set of Buddhaghosa' s commentaries. Are these
available digitally? and if not, what is the best edition to buy?
