Dhammapadaṃ, 2. Appamādavaggo (Carefulness), Verse 21
appamādo amatapadaṃ | pamādo maccuno padaṃ ||
appamattā na mīyanti | ye pamattā yathā matā || 21 ||
1)
21. Earnestness is the path of immortality (Nirvâna),
thoughtlessness the path of death.
Those who are in earnest do not die,
those who are thoughtless are as if dead already.
-- Translation by F. Max Müller from The Dhammapada, p. 9,
Vol. X of The Sacred Books of the East, 1881
2)
21. Carefulness is the place of the death-free;
carelessness is the place of death.
The careful do not die; the careless are as though (already) dead.
-- Translation by K.R. Norman from The Word of the Doctrine, p. 4,
The Pali Text Society, 2000

Note: Müller's translation is placed first because it is older than
Norman's.
