Dhammapadaṃ, 1. Yamakavaggo (The Pairs), Verse 1

manopubbaṅgamā dhammā | manoseṭṭhā manomayā ||
manasā ce paduṭṭhena | bhāsati vā karoti vā ||
tato naṃ dukkhamanveti | cakkaṃva vahato padaṃ || 1 ||

1. Mental phenomena are preceded by mind, have mind as their leader,
           are made by mind.
If one acts or speaks with an evil mind,
from that sorrow follows him, as the wheel follows the foot of the ox.

-- Translation by K.R. Norman from The Word of the Doctrine, p. 1
     Pali Text Society, 2000

1. Mind is the forerunner of (all evil) states. Mind is chief; mind-made are
           they.
If one speaks or acts with wicked mind,
because of that, suffering follows one,
even as the wheel follows the hoof of the draught-ox.

Notes:
1) The Dhammapada probably has the most English translations of any text in
the Pali Canon. The article on this text in en.wikipedia.org provides a
handy list of 59 translations into English.

2) It has never been clear to me what the title 'Dhammapada' actually means
especially the -pada part. I sometimes wonder if the singular here could be
a unity of many things like the -pañho in the title 'Milindapañho'.

Best wishes,
Jim
