" how directly samma sankappa is linked  to 3 of the 4 brahmaviharas"

My thoughts on the subject.

Sammaa sankappa is the second component of Ariyoa.t.tha.ngikomaggo.  Brahmavihaara is not the AAM.

Brahmavihaara: Eta.m sati.m adittheyya, brahmameta.m vihaara.m idamaahu.

The link between the two is as follows: di.t.thi.mca anupagamma siilava dassanena sampanno ...kaamesu vineyyagedha.,m nahi jaatu gabbhaseyya.m puneretiti.

Of course, I don't pretend to understand these things. However, the Pali words are all from Karanniiyametta Sutta

Sammaasa, nkappa is a component (constituent) of Ariyoa.t.tha.gikomaggo. That is not something that can be understood by a mere mortal (puthujjana).

Or from a difference perspective, both these are attributes of the mind. There are no definitions for these terms in English.

From the perspective of Bhagavtaa Dhammo, Vyaapaada is present until one becomes an anaagaamii (a non-returner). Only an anaagaamii has abyaapaada.
From the perspective of Paatimokkha, even a samana is not expected to have "hi.msaa". (samano na hoti para.m vihethayanto).

Again hi.msaa is to hurt others (mind, body or words); Avihi.msa is not to hurt others.

Abyaapaada is a mental state where you don't come into conflict with the world.

Finally Bhagavataa Dhammo cannot be understood without: majjhimaa pa.tipadaa, Ariyoa.t.tha.gikomaggo; dukkhanirodhagaaminii pa.tipadaa.

I am not aware of a single person in this whole world who is even on majjhimaa pa.tipadaa.

I used to have that same question. I still don't have a satisfactory answer, but I have some ideas.
byapada being ill will, but with abyapada one still has enough sila and retraint to block it from forming into a verbal or bodily action.
vihimsa being harmfulness, one is willing to manifest the ill will into a harmful verbal or bodily action.

a related question i have regards how directly samma sankappa is linked  to 3 of the 4 brahmaviharas. I've read in at least 2 or thanissaro's books that he thinks those brahmaviharas are forms of samma sankappa. I don' recall reading any pali suttas where this link is explicitly made. anyone know for sure?

In samma·sankappa, we find abyapada·sankappa and
avihimsa·sankappa (besides nekkhamma·sankappa). I
still can't see why is there a need to include
avihimsa·sankappa. Shouldn't abyapada·sankappa cover it?

OR perhaps I'm not understanding these terms correctly.

Please enlighten.
