Chapter IV Analysis of Sentences

2. "Na, bhikkhave, Tathaagato idaan'eva lokassa attha.m carati, pubbe pi cari yeva." [J.i,259-261]

YP: "O monks, the Tathagata not only acts [for] the welfare of the world now, but acted in the past too."

3. "Ajja kho pan'Aananda, rattiyaa pacchime yaame, Kusinaaraaya.m Upavattane Mallaana.m saalavane, antarena yamaka-saalaana.m, Tathaagatassa parinibbaana.m bhavissati". [D.ii,134]

YP: "And indeed, O Ananda, today, at the last watch of the night, in Upavattana, the Sala Grove of the Mallas in Kusinara, in between the twin Sala trees, the final passing away of the Tathagata will take place."

4. "Satthari hi pa.thama-gamanena Kapilapura.m gantvaa ka.ni.t.tha-bhaatika.m Nandakumaara.m pabbaajetvaa Kapilapuraa nikkhamma anupubbena Saavatthi.m gantvaa viharante aayasmaa Nando... anabhirato... ahosi." [J.ii,92]

YP: "Indeed, when the master, having gone to Kapilavatthu and ordained (his) youngest brother Prince Nanda on (his) first trip, and having left Kapilavatthu, and in turn gone to and was living in Savatthi, the venerable Nanda was... not taking delight.
