Kind Lady

Your reply is much appreciated. It helped me clarify my understanding of the
problem.

Yes, I understood the general use of the dative with verb with the meaning
of giving and I have only seen this used for giving material things.

As you know the verb in the sentence does not have the *direct* meaning of
giving. If we understand the indirect meaning of "giving the dhamma",
"dhamma" is not a *material* thing, but an abstract noun. So on two grounds
it doesn't seem right to me.

I hope anyone could clarify this more.

Kind Regards

N: I was thinking of your question which is a good one, and went to
Ven. Pandita's relational grammar which I admire very much. He posted
this some years ago. (I hope he is reading this and can help us).
He said about dative:< A. Receptive Relation3 (REC)
Here a noun expressing the receiver of something given is related to a
verb expressing the act of giving.
rukkhassa jala.m dadaati =... give water to (the / a) tree.
rukkhassa ---> dadaati (REC)>

I think the devas and men are the receivers.

with respect,
Nina.
