Ven/Kind Sirs and Ladies
Could you clarify/correct a few things for me from Buddhadatta's New Pali
Course as below?
I have been told that there is a fifth conjugation for feminine nouns ending
in uu which is not in this book and an example is vathuu - lady. Are there
details online with other words so conjugated?
What are the translations of the samples for the 7 Verb Conjugation Groups:
Bhu-v-aadi-ga.na - 'to be' sample group
Rodha-aadi-ga.na - 'to cry' sample group
Diva-aadi-ga.na - 'to shine' sample group
Sva-aadi-ga.na - ?
Kiya-aadi-ga.na - ?
Tana-aadi-ga.na - ?
Cura-aadi-ga.na - 'to steal' sample group
Are these adverbs of place governed by.?
upari = up, over (the Instrumental) e.g.
Asani rukkhassa upari patitvaa saakhaa chinditvaa taru.m maaresi.
lightning-bolt / tree / over / having fallen / branches / having cut / tree
/ destroyed
Having fallen over the tree and cut the branches the lightning-bolt
destroyed the tree.
tiriya.m = across (the Locative) e.g.
Dhanavatiyaa nattaaro magge tiriya.m dhaavitvaa a.tavi.m pavisitvaa
niliiyi.msu.
[of] rich woman / grandsons / path / accross / having run / forest / having
entered / hid
Having run across the path and entered the forest, the grandsons of the rich
woman hid.
anto = inside (the Instrumental) e.g.
Naariyaa duhitaro gehassa anto ma~ncesu sayissanti.
[of] woman / daughters / house / inside / [on] beds / will sleep
The woman's daughters will sleep on the beds inside the house.
antaraa = between (the Instrumental) e.g.
Te gehassa ca rukkhassa ca antaraa kii.li.msu.
they / house / and / tree / and / between / played
They played between the house and the tree.
purato = in the front of, before [the Genitive] e.g.
The millionaire fell on (his) knees before the king and bowed
down at his feet.
se.t.thii / patitvaa / jaanuuhi / purato / bhuupatino / vandi / tassa /
paadesu
Se.t.thii bhuupatino purato jaanuuhi patitvaa tassa paadesu vandi.
All these rather than accusative should govern:
Bhaayati ablative, that is "fear from ABL"
Dadaati dative, that is "give ACC to DAT"
Deseti dative, that is "preach ACC to DAT".
These rather than dative should govern:
Yaacati accusative, that is "ask (ACC) for ACC".
Gacchati accusative, that is "go to ACC"
Is it correct to say:
You can't directly say in Pali "I go to the minister." If you go to a living
thing, you can't say that thing directly, but you must say "to the residence
(santika.m ) [etc] of" the living thing.
The Instrumental must be used with "vinaa" (meaning "without").
"He takes ACC from ABL."
Kind Regards
