N:It is not easy to translate. I think Paali here means just the
text. The Co states that the two words:pada bya~njana, just mean:
paali, thus, the text.
Could it be that 'the letter of the text' implies the text as it
literally is written or recited. The letter of the text: the text
according to the letter, and then I do not think of just one
'akkhara' or letter. The text may be corrupted, thus, several words
or sentences.
This reminds me of Jim's Kaccayaana study of akkhara. He had many
posts about akkhara, perhaps he can help?
