Chapter VII Definition of the Indeclinables

How are you living alone, Elder? and how do you commend that living?

(c) "Yahaa pana gopaalakena niyyaaditaana.m gunna.m gorasa.m saamikaa va paribhu~njanti." [DhA.i,158]

YP: There is a typo here, the sentence should be "Yathaa pana...

YP: "As though like the owners enjoy dairy products of the cows presented by Gopalaka."

(d) Naaha.m, bhikkhave, a~n~na.m ekaruupam pi samanupassaami ya.m evam purisassa citta.m pariyaadaaya ti.t.thati yatha-y-ida.m bhikkhave itthiruupa.m." [A.i,1]

"Monks, I know of no other single form by which a man's heart is so enslaved as it is by that of a woman."

(e) "Tehi pi me saddhi.m evam kathaasallaapo hoti yatha-r-iva bhotaa Gotamena." [D.i,90]

With them I would talk as I do now to the venerable Gotama.

In compounds:

* yathaakaama.m, according to one's wish
* yathaatatha.m, in its real sense
* yathaabhuuta.m, according to truth
* yathaadhamma.m, according to the law
* yathaabala.m, according to one's strength
* yathaasaka.m, each his own
* yathaasukha.m, at ease

157. yadi, if

"Yadi pana me paraajayo bhaveyya, matam me jiivitaa seyyo." [Guttila-Vimaanavatthu]

It is better to die than to live, if I were to be defeated.

158. yad-ida.m, as that; the following; namely

"Ekaayano aya.m, bhikkhave, maggo sattaana.m visuddhiyaa... yadida.m cattaaro satipa.t.thaanaa." [D.ii,290]

"The one and only path, bhikkhus, leading to the purification of beings... is that of the Fourfold Setting-up of Mindfulness."

159. ya.m nuuna, let me; what if; it is better if; so now; rather

"Ya.m nuunaaha.m eko ga.namhaa vupaka.t.tho vihareyya.m." [DhA.i,56]

Let me live alone apart from the community.

160. yaava, as far as; up to; so far that

"Atthi koci tevijjaana.m braahma.naana.m yaava sattamaa aacariyamaha-yugaa yena Brahmaa sakkhi di.t.tho?" [D.i,238]

Is there then a single brahman who is versed in the three Vedas, up to the seventh generation, who has seen Brahmaa face to face?

161. yaava kiiva~n ca, so long as

"Yaava kiiva~n ca, bhikkhave, bhikkhuu abhi.nhasannipaataa... bhavissanti, vuddhi yeva bhikkhuuna.m paa.tika`nkhaa." [D.ii,76]

So long, O monks, as the brethren forgather oft - so long may the brethren be expected to prosper.

162. yaavad eva, only for; far enough

"Yaavad eva anatthaaya ~natta.m baalassa jaayati." [Dhp.v.72]

Only for his own disadvantage a simpleton acquires knowledge.

163. yaavataa, as far as; because

"Yaavataa, Cundii, sattaa apadaa vaa dipadaa vaa catuppadaa vaa... Tathaagato tesa.m aggam akkhaayati." [A.iii,35]

Whatsoever beings there are, Cundii, whether footless, two-footed, or four-footed... of them the Exalted One is declared the best.

* yaavatiha.m, as many days as
* yaavataayuka.m, as long as life lasts
* yaavadicchaka.m, as much as is desired
