Chapter VII Definition of the Indeclinables

151. mudhaa, for nothing; gratis

"Raajaa: Pa~nca sataani datvaa ga.nhantuu ti bheri.m caraapetvaa ki~nci ga.nhanaka.m adisvaa... mudhaa pi ga.nhantuu ti bheri.m caraapesi." [DhA.iii,108]

The king proclaimed to the beating of a drum that anyone willing to buy (Sirima's corpse) might do so with 500 pieces of money; and seeing that no one was coming forward he next proclaimed that they might have her for nothing.

152. musaa, false; falsehood

(a) "Musaa ta.m saami; tucchaa va caa.tiyo." [DhA.i,444]

What I said was false, master; the vessels are empty.

(b) "Musaa na bhaase, na ca majjapo siyaa." [A.i,214]

One should not utter falsehood; nor should one partake of strong drinks.

153. muhu.m*, very quickly; repeatedly

"Naha nuuna dubbhissasi ma.m punappuna.m
Muhu.m muhu.m caaranika.m va dassaya.m." [Theg.v.1129]

Thou shalt not dupe me again and again like a mountebank showing his quickly moving marionette.

154. yagghe is a hortative particle used in addressing a superior

"Yagghe, mahaaraaja, jaaneyyaasi: aha.m aagacchaami uttaraaya disaaya, tatth'addasa.m mahanta.m pabbata.m..." [S.i,101]

"May it please you to know, sire, that I have come from the northern districts, and that I there saw a great mountain."

155. yato, wherefrom; because; from which; since; inasmuch as

(a) "Yato aha.m pabbajito agaarasmaa'nagaariya.m." [Theg.v.48]

Since I went forth from home to homeless life.

(b) "Yato yato sammasati khandhaana.m udayabbaya.m." [Dhp.v.374]

From whatever point he beholds the rise and fall of aggregates.

(c) "Yato kho, Mahaanaama, Buddha.m sara.na.m gato hoti... ettaavataa kho, Mahaanaama, upaasako hoti." [S.V.395]

One becomes a disciple by reason of his going for refuge to the Buddha, etc.

(d) "Yato uggacchati suriyo aadicco ma.n.dalii mahaa..." [D.iii,196]

"Whence cometh up the sun, Aditis' child, Orbed and vast..." [D.B.iii,190]

(e) "Yato kho bho aya.m attaa pa~ncahi kaamagu.nehi samappito sama`ngibhuuto paricaareti, ettaavataa kho ayam attaa parama-di.t.thadhamma-nibbaa.nappatto hoti." [D.i,36]

"Whenever the soul, in full enjoyment and possession of the five pleasures of sense, indulges all its functions, then the soul has attained, in this visible world, to the highest Nirvaana." [D.B.i,50]

156. yathaa, as if; so that; just as; as; so; even as
yathaa katham pana, how so then?
yathaa pana, like as
yatha-r-iva, just as
yatha-y-ida.m, as just this
yathaa tathaa, in whatever way

(a) "Yathaa agaara.m ducchanna.m vu.t.thi samativijjhati." [Dhp.v.13; Theg.v.133]

Even as rain penetrates an ill-thatched house.

(b) "Yathaa katham pana tva.m, thera, ekavihaarii, ekavihaarassa ca va.n.navaadii?" [S.ii,283]
