Chapter VII Definition of the Indeclinables

100. tiriya.m, across; horizontally

"So pana Devalo nipajjamaano attano nisinna.t.thaane anipajjitvaa dvaaramajjhe tiriya.m nipajji." [DhA.i,40]

YP: "That lying Devala did not lie down on his couch, but lay across the middle of the door."

YP: I have 'nisinna.t.thaana' as 'couch'.

101. tiro, across; through; beyond

"Tiro ku.d.da.m tiro paakaara.m tiro pabbata.m asajjamaano gacchati, seyyathaa pi aakaase." [D.i,78]

He goes through a wall, rampart or hill, feeling no obstruction and as if through the air.

102. tu, indeed

"Tathaa tu kassaami yathaa pi issaro." [Theg.v.1138]

Thus will I do even as a master should do.

103. tu.nhii, silent

(a) "Tatiyam pi kho te bhikkhuu tu.nhii ahesu.m." [D.ii,155]

YP: "For the third time too, indeed, those monks were silent."

(b) "Nindanti tu.nhii-m-aasiina.m." [Dhp.v.227]

They blame him who sits silent.

104. tuva.ta.m, quickly

"Tuva.ta.m kho, ayyaputta, aagaccheyyaasi." [DhA.i,116]

YP: "Quickly indeed, O young master, come."

105. divaa, day-time; by day

(a) "Eke sama.na-braahma.naa ratti.m yeva samaana.m divaa ti sa~njaananti." [M.i,125]

When it is truly night, some recluses and brahmans imagine it is day-time.

(b) "Idha me, bho Gotama, ya.m divaa paapakamma.m kata.m hoti ta.m saaya.m nahaanena pavaahemi." [S.i,183]

Venerable Gotama, the sins that I have committed during the day-time I wash off by bathing in the evening.

106. diigharatta.m, for a long time

"Tad assa Uttiyassa paribbaajakassa diigharatta.m ahitaaya dukkhaaya." [A.V,194]

It may bring, for a long time, harm and misery to the wandering ascetic Uttiya.

107. du.t.thu, badly; wrongly

"Dubbha.nitan ti bha.nantena pi du.t.thu bha.nita.m." [SN.A,396]

'Dubbha.nita.m' means that which was ill-spoken by the speaker.

108. dhi, fie! shame! woe!

"So... Satthu purato naggo a.t.thaasi; manussaa 'dhii, dhii'ti aaha.msu." [Nacca-Jaataka J.i,206-8]

He stood naked before the Teacher; the people began to shout: Fie! Fie!

109. dhiratthu (dhi+atthu), shame!

"Dhiratthu ta.m janapada.m
Yatth'itthii pari.naayikaa." [Ka.n.dina-Jaataka]

Shame be unto that country where the leader is a woman.

110. dhuva.m, certainly; constantly

"Te p'ajja sabbe santu.t.thaa;
Dhuva.m Buddho bhavissasi." [Bud.p.11]

They are all joyful today; surely you will become a Buddha.

111. na, no (negative and adversative particles), no; not

(a) "Na tassa.m parisaaya.m koci devo abhivaadeti vaa paccu.t.theti vaa." [D.ii,210]

There is no god in that assembly that salutes him, or rises up.

(b) "Ala.m baalassa mohaaya; no ca paaragavesino." [Theg.v.771,772]

"All good enough for dull wit of a fool,
But not for him who seeketh the Beyond." [Ps.B.303]
