"Dve'me, bhikkhave, antaa pabbajitena na sevitabbaa. Katame dve?
Yo caaya.m kaamesu kaamasukhallikaanuyogo - hiino, gammo,
pothujjaniko, anariyo, anatthasa.mhito, yo caaya.m
attakilamathaanuyogo - dukkho, anariyo, anatthasa.mhito.
Ete kho, bhikkhave, ubho ante anupagamma majjhimaa pa.tipadaa
Tathaagatena abhisambuddhaa cakkhukara.nii, ~naa.nakara.nii,
upasamaaya, abhi~n~naaya, sambodhaaya, nibbaanaaya sa.mvattati.

"Monks, these two extremes are not to be practiced by one who has
gone forth. What are the two?

which and this/among sensepleasures/devotion to worldly enjoyment/ low/
gammo, /pothujjaniko, /anariyo, /anatthasa.mhito,
vulgar/ common/ ignoble/ disadvantageous/

Just this, devotion to a life of luxury among sensual pleasures,
which is low, vulgar, common, ignoble, and disadvantageous;

yo caaya.m/ attakilamathaanuyogo - / dukkho/, anariyo, /
anattha/sa.mhito.
which and this/devotion to self-mortification,/painful/, ignoble,/
disadvantage/possessed of/.

and just this, devotion to self-mortification, which is painful,
ignoble, and disadvantageous.

Ete/ kho/, bhikkhave, /ubho/ ante /anupagamma /majjhimaa /
pa.tipadaa
these /indeed/monks/both/ extremes/ not approaching/ middle/
practice/

Monks, not approaching either of these extremes, the middle way,

Tathaagatena/ abhisambuddhaa/ cakkhukara.nii,/ ~naa.nakara.nii,
by the Tathagata/perfectly realized/produces insight/produces knowledge,

perfectly realized by the Tathagata, produces insight, produces
knowledge,

/ upasamaaya/, abhi~n~naaya/, sambodhaaya/, nibbaanaaya/
sa.mvattati.
to calmness,/to higher knowledge/, to enlightenment/, to nibbaana /
leads to/

and leads to calmness, higher knowledge, enlightenment, and Nirvana.

"Monks, these two extremes are not to be practiced by one who has
gone forth. What are the two?
Just this, devotion to a life of luxury among sensual pleasures,
which is low, vulgar, common, ignoble, and disadvantageous; and just
this, devotion to self-mortification, which is painful, ignoble, and
disadvantageous.
Monks, not approaching either of these extremes, the middle way,
perfectly realized by the Tathagata, produces insight, produces
knowledge, and leads to calmness, higher knowledge, enlightenment,
and Nirvana.

it.Sukhallika: attachment.
anuyogo: devotion to
anattha: no benefit (attha)
sa.mhito: equipped with, possessed of.

nibbaana: Ven. Nanamoli and Ven. Narada keep to the Pali nibbaana in
their translations, instead of the Sanskrit nirvana. I prefer to keep
the Pali nibbaana.
