I have long wondered whether Cakkavattis are supposed to have actually existed, or if they are presented as an ideal to be strived for. I don't think the Tipitaka is meant to be a text-book of history; after all, all the Buddha's teaching is said to be about "dukkha and the end of dukkha", not about academical knowledge.

The Buddha also used the word "braahma.na" in his own way, e. g. in the last chapter of the Dhammapada.
