Chapter VII Definition of the Indeclinables

29. abhikkha.na.m, constantly; repeatedly; often

"Tassa Jetavane viharantassa abhikkha.na.m ~naatidaarakaa santikam aagantvaa kathaasallaapa.m karonti." [DhA.ii,91]

YP: "The children of the relative(s) of him living in Jetavana often come near and make the conversation."

30. abhi.nha.m, same as the above

"Ittha.m suda.m Bhagavaa aayasmanta.m Raahula.m imaahi gaathaahi abhi.nha.m ovadati." [SN.60] It was in this wise that, in these stanzas, the Lord again and again exhorted the reverend Raahula.

31. ambho, hey! hello!

"Ambho, du.t.tha-braahma.na, a~n~nesa.m idaan'eva dhana.m vassaapetvaa amhe a~n~na.m sa.mvacchara.m adhivaasaapesi." [J.i,253-256] Hey, rascal braahman, having caused to rain treasures just now for others, you make us wait another year.

32. are, hey! I say! (implying an imprecation)

"Are, du.t.tha-ce.taka, Illisamahaase.t.thii sakalanagarassa daana.m deti; tva.m ki.m ahosi?" [J.i,345-354] (Tva.m ki.m ahosi? What are you?)

YP: "Hey, wicked servant, Illisa the great merchant gives alms to the whole town; what are you?"

33. ala.m, enough; stop; able; fit for; proper

(a) "Ala.m, aavuso, maa socittha; maa paridevittha." [D.ii,162]

YP: "Enough, friend, do not be sorrow; do not weep."

(b) "Evam eta.m, Sumane, alam eva daanaani daatu.m; ala.m pu~n~naani kaatu.m." [A.iii,34] It is so, Sumanaa, it is proper to bestow alms; it is proper to do meritorious acts.

(c) "Satthaa: Ala.m ettaka.m imassaa ti pakkaami." [DhA.i,27] The Teacher went away thinking that this much is enough for him.

In compounds:

* alamariya-~naa.nadassana, truly genuine intuition
* ala.mkammaniya, suitable for action
* ala.mpateyyaa, (a damsel) grown enough to be married
* ala.mvacaniiyaa, (a girl) who understands what others say
* ala.mvacaniiya.m katvaa, having divorced one's wife

34. avassa.m, inevitably

Avassa.m mayaa maritabba.m. I shall die inevitably.

35. su, is a pleonastic particle

(a) "Aaditta'ssu naam'ajja Vediyako pabbato, jalita'ssu naam'ajja Vediyako pabbato." [D.ii,264]

For sure the Vediyaka mountain is on fire today!
For sure the Vediyaka mountain is burning today!

(b) "Kena'ssu niiyati loko?" [S.i,39]

What is that whereby the world is led?

36. ahe, is used in addressing equals (very rare)

"Sakko ca me vara.m dajjaa Tavati.msaanam issaro,
Taa'ha.m bhadde, vareyyaa'he..." [D.ii,267]

"And if per chance a boon were granted me
By Sakka, lord of Three-and-Thirty gods,
'Tis three I'd ask of him, lady..." [D.B.ii,304]

P.T.S. Dictionary states this to be an exclamation of surprise or bewilderment; but the Com. on Diigha has: "Ahe ti aamantana.m".

37. aho, alas; yea; indeed (exclamation of surprise or consternation)

(a) "Aho! Buddhaana.m buddhaanubhaavo naama." [Va.t.taka J.i,212-215]

YP: "Alas! Greatness of the Buddhas indeed."

(b) "Aho! Imasmi.m loke ayutta.m vattati." [J.i,175-8]

YP: "Alas! In this world, injustice prevails."
