The Japanese word "giri" is written with Chinese characters read in pinyin
as yi-li. The word is Confucian in origin and hence has nothing whatsoever
to do with Pali. The English equivalents given are a bit misleading ~ the
main meaning of the word is "duty" / "obligation". In Sino-Japanese, the
word used for hrii is 慚 or 慚愧. More graphically, the Tibetan translation is
"ngo tsha ba", which literally means "hot-faced" ~ that is, a blush.
