Dear Ong Teng Kee;
Did you actually read what I wrote?
Nothing in my message suggests that I am planning to break any law
law, American, Thai, or of any other country.
Which means plain and simple that you are being pugnacious and trying
to pick a fight which hardly seems very Buddhist itself.
Granted, most out-of-print books are photocopied in Thailand and also
expensive foreign volumes. And this may be a violation of American and
even world intellectual property laws. For most people it is either
this or not read the book. You may think this violates the precept
against stealing in Buddhism. I certainly do not. There is actually a
debate over intellectual property law and it is not carved in stone
for all time by any means. One recent academic paper (that I read for
free over the internet) suggests that there should be a **tax on
unused intellectual property** which would have the beneficial
side-effect of freeing up much of it and **prevent people from
hoarding intellectual property** as they do. Not hoarding intellectual
property could be considered an act of giving or Dana. I donate lots
of books. In fact, I got permission before I donated Justin McDaniel's
PhD dissertation to the Siam Society but I would still donate it with
or without permission and consider it an act of Dana, and I will
continue doing so.
With metta,
Jon Fernquest
