I post below the opinion given in the *A New Course in Reading Pali *p.
12, which seems to me odd.
note 5:
Note that though the relative pronoun generally takes the case proper to its
function in its own clause, as stated in this Grammar 4.2, it is sometimes
"attracted" to the case of the noun to which it refers in the main clause.
Thus here ya.m is accusative, agreeing with the accusative (masculine) noun
-sadda.m although it is subject ot its own clause, and therefore should be
nominative.
