Dear Dave;

There is only a Magghadeva Jataka (J.9) about the king who retired
upon seeing his first white hair (as far as I know, A Concordance of
Birth Stories, Pali Text Society, 1994, Leslie Grey, is a useful tool
for determining things like this).

> And I'm puzzled by the reference's regarding vs 30: By Heedfulness
> did Indra become the overlord of the gods.

"According to the Sa.myuttanikaya Commentary Tavatimsa was named after
Magha and his thirty-two companions who were reborn there as a result
of their good deeds in Macalagaama...

...The palace Vejayanta is so called because it was built by Sakka in
the Taavati.msa just in the hour of his victory over the Asuras.
According to Buddhaghosa, it arose on the virtue of Sakka who built a
rest-house, in his previous birth as Magha, for the use of the multitude."

Also: "Taavati.msa is borrowed from the Vedic conception of 33 devas."

(Early Buddhist Mythology, J.R. HAldar, 1977, page 24)

This useful reference manual has even more, for example about the
battle with the Asuras mentioned above. It seems like a lot of the
whole story comes originally from the commentaries.

With metta,
