I referred in an earlier posting to a book which annotated Pali
sentences much like John uses in his translations:

Anuruddha Maha Thero, Kakkapalliye. Pali Dictionary of Idioms, Hong
Kong, Chi Lin Nunnery, 2004.

Very hard to find but useful for practice much like the keys to
exercises on this site.
