This is a sentence extracted from the story of Ma.t.thaku.n.dali
(Yamakavaggo) who never was able to listen to the Buddha because of
his miserly father. However he was able to profess his faith mentally
just before dying and was reborn in heaven.
very foolish father / because of / such***or only the body??? / Buddha
/ having approached / alms / or / to give / or / to hear / did not get
/ other / fit to be done / there is no / mind / made peaceful
Because of such a foolish father he approached the Buddha...he didn't
get to give alms or to hear the Dhamma...he thought "there's nothing
else to be done" and his mind became peaceful.
In the Pali Lookup dictionary evaruupa.m is translated by "such" or
"such form" hence my translation "because of such a foolish father".
However I am wondering if it could not be an adverd related to
upasa.mkamitvaa, especially when we think about the fact that he
actually didn't really approach the Buddha in the story. If I remember
well he just turned his body towards the Buddha. So could the
translation be "he only got his body near to the Buddha"? I must say
that I very often feel confused by the use of "eva" or "pana" in the
texts, whether they should be translated or not.
