Hi!
Don't worry about being a beginner in Pali studies. i'm also a beginner. you are lucky because in your country, you can get a Diploma from the Buddhist and Pali University. in the Philippines, there's no such things! i would need to go to Sri Lanka or somewhere else just to have a formal study of Pali.
i'm also using the same textbook. but i know that i'm lagging behind in my studies. i had to stop for at least two weeks because i attended a 10-day vipassana meditation retreat. and reading materials are not allowed during the retreat. now, i have to review my lessons again.
good luck to us in our studies, uncle Cheah.

Dear All Friends in the Dhamma,
My full name is Cheah Sin Chye and everyone I know
calls me "Uncle Cheah"
I am a 74-year old male Malaysian of Chinese race.
Since August this year (2007) I have been attending
weekly lectures (every Saturday) at the Buddhist Maha
Vihara in Kuala Lumpur on subjects within their
respective syllabuses of the Diploma in Buddhism
examinations of the Buddhist and Pali University in
Sri Lanka.
I am a total beginner to the study of the Pali
language.
As a lay devotee,I have been able to pay homage by
daily recital, in Pali (my pronunciations need
corrections!) of the Vandana (Salutation to the
Buddha). Ti-Sarana (Taking the Three Refuges) and the
Panca Sila (The Five Precepts). I have been relying on
the English translations to realise the meanings of
these recitals.
I know that in my study for the Diploma I will be
unable to get a true basic understanding of the
Buddha's teachings without a basic knowledge of Pali.
I am certain I will be able to get a lot of help by
joining the Group and I hope to be able to share my
experience as a beginner with others at the same
level.
My class is using the New Pali Course Part I by Prof.
A.P Buddhadatta, Maha Nayaka Thera.
Thank you.
